People of Beechworth exhibition

THANKS to funding from the Australian Government, a donation from the family of Ern Hawking and the Indigo Shire Council, the Burke Museum has an exciting new long–term exhibition.

Entitled 'People of Beechworth', the exhibition focuses on the strength of the Beechworth community and its resilience to come together in the face of the Black Summer bushfires and the COVID–19 pandemic.

Portrait photographs of 10 Beechworth residents are the centrepiece, and compares and contrasts their stories with the historical collections and personalities of the town.

Exploring themes such as food and culture, volunteering, sport, Chinese history and gender equity, People of Beechworth shows that history is not something confined to the past – it is being made every day.

The exhibition also features a portrait gallery of the many people who live and work in the town, with these images captured during a series of community open days in March 2022.

The themes and stories are modular, and will change over time, with visitors encouraged to put forward suggestions for future people to feature during or after their visit.

The Burke Museum is Australia's oldest regional museum and displays collections related to the history of Beechworth, the gold rush and the Burke and Wills expedition.

Open every day from 10am to 5pm with entry starting at $3 for concession card holders, you can purchase tickets here: https://www.explorebeechworth.com.au/burke–museum–and–historic–precinct.
