Brand new mural to depict Ned’s last stand

THE bare wall of Kate's Cottage is getting a facelift thanks to St Andrew's artist Andrew Bourke.

Andrew, who recently won first place for his street art mural in Darwin and has created murals for Benalla's Wall to Wall Mural Festival, is now turning his talent to a depiction of the Kelly Gang's final moments.

Owners of Kate's Cottage – Michelle and Doug – came up with the initial vision for the mural to show the series of events that led to the final stand and Ned's capture but left the creativity and layout to Andrew before the three came together and settled on a final design.

"The mural will showcase the Kelly Gang's final moments from school teacher Thomas Curnow flagging down the police train, through to the siege at Ann Jones Inn," Michelle said.

"It was important for all of us to try to recreate these scenes as true to history as possible and it will be a beautiful piece of artwork."

Michelle said that Andrew has really embraced the project.

"Like many of us, the Kelly family story is one that is very dear to him.

"Not only is it a pivotal piece of Australian history, there are so many life lessons that are embedded within including personal values and belief, having the courage to stick up for what's right, even in the face of adversity, and to look out for those around you whether that's family, friends or community."

The mural will complement façade works taking place at the shop with stage one almost complete, and once they are finished, work will begin on the other side of the shop which will be in keeping with the rustic style of the colonial architecture.

The new mural should be finished by mid to late March and Andrew will be providing periodic updates via his Instagram page @andrew_j_bourke.

At Kate's Cottage you will find an excellent range of Australiana gifts and souvenirs as well as the Ned Kelly Museum at the back of the shop and a replica of the ramshackle hut the Kelly's called home out in the yard alongside a blacksmith shed, covered picnic area and some cheeky talking cockatoos.
