Last stand in Glenrowan

NED Kelly's last stand has been immortalised in paint at Kate's Cottage in Glenrowan with the completion of what the cottage owners believe is the first ever mural of the full siege.

National award winning artist Andrew J Bourke, along with contributing artist Bryan Itch, painted the mural over the course of a month in February/March this year.

It depicts the full police siege of the Kelly gang at the Glenrowan Inn, with the police and the gang engaged in a gun fight, accompanied by a large portrait of Ned Kelly.

"It was important for us to be able to represent the siege in its entirety; the flagging down of the train, the shootout between the Kelly gang and police," co–owner of Kate's Cottage, Michelle Coad said.

"We decided we wanted a mural because there's nothing in Glenrowan like it and we thought it'd be great to link the town with the art trail."

"Glenrowan is really well established as a destination town for Ned Kelly and this mural will bring the interest of holiday goers who do the art trails as well as the silo trails."

Andrew had completed multiple murals in the North East prior to his work in Glenrowan, including at the Winton Wetlands and two other Ned Kelly themed murals in Benalla.

He also won first place for his street art mural in Darwin earlier in the year.

"When we saw the Ned Kelly mural Andrew did on the back of the shops in Benalla, we were drawn to it... he just was the right guy for the job," Michelle said

Michelle and Doug came up with the initial vision for the mural to show the series of events that led to the final stand and Ned's capture but left the creativity and layout to Andrew before the three came together and settled on a final design.

In addition to the stunning new mural, you will find an excellent range of Australiana gifts and souvenirs at Kate's Cottage.

There is also the Ned Kelly Museum at the back of the shop and a replica of the ramshackle hut the Kelly's called home out in the yard alongside a blacksmith shed, covered picnic area and some cheeky talking cockatoos.

So, add the last stand mural in Glenrowan to your list of 'must–see' icons this winter.
