Ned Kelly tourism attraction at lockup stage

THE much anticipated Ned Kelly Glenrowan Project's tower that will tell the story of the historical seige and the events leading up to it has reached lockup stage at the historic town.

On that fateful day of June 28, 1880 there was a standoff (now called The Last Stand), between the Kelly Gang, consisting of Ned and Dan Kelly, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, and police.

Three of the gang members died during the siege, while Ned was captured, tried before a court in October, and executed in November that year.

Visitors will be able to walk up the tower and view the key locations around the town connected to the Kelly story and the siege, including the train line and the Ann Jones Inn site.

The tower build cost $5.459 million, which included $507,126 for the graphic design element and $177,650 for the audio–visual/multimedia production features.

Marcus Goonan, council director of community and infrastructure, said the Glenrowan Heritage Project is progressing well with the building at lockup stage and fit out well underway.

"This will be one of the most impressive buildings in the North East – and even more exciting is the multimedia component of the project which is coming along well," he said.

"We can't wait to show this building off to the community and visitors alike."
