Rutherglen’s Tastes of Art Prize returns in March

KNOWN for attracting a depth of artistic talent from around Australia, the annual Rutherglen Tastes of Art Prize will be held at the Memorial Hall in Rutherglen from March 10 to 19.

For Arts Rutherglen, it is the sixth successful prize and it coincides with beautiful autumn weather when visitors flock to the region to visit its cellar doors to sample local produce.

Arts Rutherglen, in conjunction with Winemakers of Rutherglen, are providing a feast of art, culture, food and wine over the March long weekend.

Organiser Irena Webster said the event has grown in size and popularity with many repeat visitors.

"Often buyers have their favourite artists and will return looking for more works for their walls," she said.

"Also, we are particularly proud of the exuberant youth award entries."

Artists' entries closed on the weekend.

Judges for this year's event are Wangaratta Art Gallery exhibition officer Inga Hanover and Wangaratta Chronicle senior photographer, Kurt Hickling.

Winners will be announced at the much–loved gala opening cocktail evening being held on Friday, March 10 at 6.30pm.

Ms Webster said an added attraction this year will be a tribute to the late Chiltern portrait artist, Geoff Lonergan, whose superb paintings of ABC presenters will be displayed in the foyer.

"We welcome as many people as possible for viewing and purchase," she said.

"With paintings, work on paper, photography, 3D small artwork and youth works, there is much to delight, inspire and buy."

The total prize pool in 2023 is $14,350, growing year on year due to the generosity of the local business and private sponsors.

Event organisers thanked Destination Rutherglen and Campbells Wines – the major gold sponsors – for their support.
