Lions catering tasty reward for runners

WHILE not the traditional caterers of the upcoming Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run, the Glenrowan Lions Cub has answered the late call up to supply runners and visitors of the marathon on Sunday, March 19, with plenty to eat.

The Wangaratta Lions Club traditionally caters for the marathon, but due to commitments in the Black Dog Ride happening on the same day, they have called on the Glenrowan Lions Club and president Ian Cooper for assistance.

"We're always happy to help out Wangaratta if they need us and vice versa, it's quite a good relationship between the Wangaratta and the Glenrowan Lions Clubs," he said.

"We love to make some money for the community and we're always looking for more members from the local community to come along and join."

The Glenrowan Lions Club will be putting on a barbeque and providing tasty food including snags, and eggs and bacon on the day.

The club can usually be seen catering at the community market held every public holiday, such as this upcoming Labour Day on March 13, opposite the old Glenrowan station from 8am until 1pm.

Lions Club Awareness Day this weekend on March 4 is an appropriate reminder of the positive impact local Lions Clubs have on the community.

Vice president of the Wangaratta Lions Club, Geoff Turnbull, said the awareness day is a great way to give Lions Clubs much deserved attention.

"We often as Lions consider ourselves as the best kept secret, we're very good at doing things behind the scenes but we're not very good at promoting what we do," he said.

"What people don't see is the good we do with that money, the things we do behind the scenes.

"We are looking for more members but particularly looking for younger members and we're looking at a number of projects over the next year or two that are actually working with a younger age group."

Representatives from Lions Clubs in the district will be celebrating Lions Awareness Day as well as 75 years of service of Lions Clubs in Australia at Numurkah tomorrow night.

The popular Moos Brew mobile coffee van will also be on site at the marathon/fun run with hot coffee, iced drinks and sweet treats to energise runners and spectators alike.
