MORE than 300 Vespa scooters from around Australia are expected to converge on Wangaratta next month, in an event which promises to combine the historic Australian rallies of the 50s and 60s and traditional European celebrations.

Organised by the Vespa Club of Australia, the event will celebrate the iconic Italian brand between March 24 and 26, with a large Saturday morning breakfast at Apex Park a highlight with more than 75 years of Vespa history expected to descend on the township.

Vespa Club of Australia president, Julie Pond, said she was looking forward to showcasing the history of the famous motor scooter, which is wildly popular throughout the European continent.

"We're also trying to bring the European style and tradition of the Vespa World Days over to Australia," she said.

"Thousands attend the annual World Days event in Europe, and each club there also holds its own national Vespa Days like this one.

"The Rural City of Wangaratta have been very welcoming, and we've enjoyed working with them to put this event together.

"It's been a real partnership, and the council has opened every window possible to make this happen."

The event's Friday itinerary features optional trips through the Beechworth hills or visits to the St James, Devenish and Goorambat communities, both of which can be repeated on the Saturday or substituted for trips to Yackandandah, through the Warby Range, or to Wandiligong.
