LAKE Mulwala started to be drained at the start of May to control the invasive Egeria densa weed and to carry out necessary infrastructure maintenance under and around the bridge, including pylon inspections, as well as retaining wall works and erosion repairs.
The waterweed is exposed to the air and winter frosts for about a month to kill it, with the lake expected to be back to its regular operating levels by early August.
If you have never seen the manmade lake when drained it is well worth a visit with the original course of the Murray River revealed.
Keen paddlers can also navigate their way through the Murray River system which is usually hidden beneath the lake and explore remnants of wrecks of yesteryear.
You can also fish or take photographs of what was once the forest on the edge of the river.
Lake Mulwala is a photographer's delight and a birdlife haven with spectacular winter sunrises and sunsets.
Over the past 15 years, Lake Mulwala has been lowered five times; in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2018.
In recent years, the lake has been drained every three to five years.
Each time the lake is drained, the twin townships of Yarrawonga and Mulwala have received a major economic injection with visitors wanting to take advantage of the eerie scenes of emptiness.
So this winter, get the family together and head across to Yarrawonga and Mulwala and let everyone know that you were there when the lake was drained in 2022.
