Showers made show-cars shine brighter at Myrtleford Show and Shine

MYRTLEFORD hit top gear on Sunday, celebrating a collection of classic cars at the showgrounds for the annual Show and Shine event.

Up to 1000 people were estimated to have dropped by to see a range of vintage vehicles, parked on the avenue of trees either side of the road leading to the showgrounds.

Attendees were also able to visit the Rotary Club's very successful Swap-Meet, selling everything from signage to antique car parts, before kicking up their heels with either swing or line-dancing.

The crowds were catered to by a range of local food vendors, including the Myrtleford Lions Club's barbeque, wood-fired pizzas, the Tu Vietnamese food van and Coffee Chakra.

"We've been planning this event all year," Chopped and Changed Custom Car Club of Myrtleford secretary, John Goodman, said.

"We had about 160 to 180 cars on display this year, with about 40 local members and more visitors arriving from all around the region, including Wangaratta, Albury, Shepparton, Tallangatta and Mount Beauty.

"The rain (Sunday morning) was a bit of a disappointment, but the afternoon was beautiful once the sun came out.

"The band 'Minnie and the Moonrakers' were fantastic.

"The Myrtleford Line Dancers were there for most of the day....we put the dancefloor out specifically for people to have fun.

"Our judges were the president from The Old Cranks Car Club from Beechworth, David McKay, and the president from the Bright Vehicle Preservation Society, David Hogg."

The judges awarded the best car to Beechworth local, Karin Piko, who entered her 2009 RCM Cobra, 5.4L fuel injected Ford Performance Vehicle V8.

The purple and white-striped Cobra was built in 2009 as a replica of a 1960s sports car.

"My car won People's Choice," Ms Piko said.

"I was pretty chuffed about that."

Mr Goodman said the club hopes expand and improve the event next year.

"Each year we try to create something a little bit different and bring some excitement to the community," he said.

"The Show and Shine will be on the same time again next year, the weekend before Melbourne Cup and we hope it will be bigger and better."
